What are the Shabbat candles?

One of the best known Jewish practices relating to the observance of the Sabbath (Saturday) is the lighting oil lamps or candles before the start. The practice is often thought to have been initiated by the Pharisees, a sect prominent Jews in the Second Temple period

Today, the lighting of a special lamp or candles on the eve of the Sabbath is considered a religious duty. The Tannaim early (the first generation of rabbis of the time the Mishnah and Talmud) is considered a well known practice so much so that their discussions, often treated with small details related to it, SCH and type of wick or oil to be allowed as opposed to its origin. Although the Bible does not explicitly direct the lights on Saturday, which prohibits the lighting of lights on the Sabbath. The conclusion is, therefore, provide light before the start of Saturday.

The bracha (blessing) said on lighting Shabbat candles is: "Blessed Thou, O Lord, who has sanctified us with His commandments and commanded us to turn the lights on Saturday in some Jewish communities .. women also recite a prayer for the health and prosperity of their families.

Lighting the lamp of the Sabbath was considered an obligation that had to be discharged and how much can be benefited from the light of lamp or candles Saturday for reading and for other purposes.

Later, the rabbis wondered if the lighting of candles or a lamp marked the beginning of the Sabbath rest, or if Saturday was not proposed until after the prayers had been recited and interpreted 2iddush.
