Scented Soy Candles Are Different Than Paraffin Based Candles

So now that you have decided to make your own scented soy candles you start to think about the different types of waxes that are available and wonder just what the difference is between soy candles and the paraffin based wax candles.

Soy is all-natural and is derived from the soybean plants grown by farmers while paraffin wax is a by-product of oil.  Since more and more people are shifting over to eco-friendly products, you decide to try your hand at soy candles for a change of pace.

Have you ever noticed all the black soot and smoke that is a by-product of paraffin-based candles? You will be happy to know that scented soy candles burn much cleaner, produce far less soot and will last longer than regular wax candles.

Have you ever had a paraffin candle overflow onto your wood table and had to clean up the mess with a razor blade or a kitchen knife? All that is necessary to clean up a soy wax candle spill is plain old warm water, a little soap and a rag. Since the wax is a natural product; you can rub it on your dry hands to help sooth them.

The most common type of soy wax is just fine for most candle applications and is readily available at most hobby stores. However, you will need a slightly different variety of soy wax if you want to change the design of your candles and go with the more fancy types of scented soy candles.

The main reason for the change in soy was is because traditionally soy wax is softer than the paraffin type of wax candle. You will never have a problem if you are always going to pour the soy wax into some sort of container. However, if you want to make a freestanding type of scented soy candle, you will need to firm up the wax a bit.

To prevent your soy candle from getting what is known as candle slump you would add a hardener or just purchase a different type of soy wax.

One of the main benefits of a soy candle, besides the subdued romantic light, is the addition of fragrance to the wax to create a scented soy candle. In the candle-making world, this is what is known as fragrance throw. That is how easy and how much fragrance is given off from the candle as it burns.

Since you are adding fragrance to your candle, you also will want to match the color to that fragrance. You would not want the scent of vanilla coming out of a chocolate candle. Well, some people might, just for a laugh or two. There are special dyes made for candles and they are also available at your local hobby store.

Because you are taking the time and effort to go with eco-friendly scented soy candles you will want to make sure that the soy wax is not contaminated with any paraffin based petroleum products. Some companies will add that to the soy wax to firm it up. That is a personal preference you will have to decide on for yourself; paraffin or no paraffin.
